Alfredo Cunha

Alfredo Cunha (Celorico da Beira, 1953) began his professional career in advertising and commercial photography in 1970.

He became a contributor to the newspaper Notícias da Amadora in 1971. He joined the newspaper O Século and the magazine O Século Ilustrado (1972), the Portuguese News Agency - ANOP (1977), and the news agencies Notícias de Portugal (1982) and Lusa (1987). His first major photo story was about the events of 25 April 1974, the day of the Portuguese revolution.

He was an official photographer of the President of the Republic António Ramalho Eanes and, later, of the President of the Republic Mário Soares.

He was a photo editor at the Portuguese newspapers Público and Jornal de Notícias, and at the agency Global Imagens.

Currently he works as a freelancer and is developing various editorial projects.

Alfredo Cunha has received several distinctions and tributes, including the Commendation of the Order of Infante D. Henrique (1995), and the honourable mentions given at Euro Press Photo 1994 and at the VisãoBES 2007 and 2008 Photojournalism Award.

He has held several solo and group photography exhibitions, and has published dozens of photography books.
